Mind Your Language - Something romantic, something pedantic

To Russia With Love??

Bringing to mind the old expression Mind Your Language, Spanish PM Jose Louis Rodriguez Zapatero waxed enthusiastic over tourism with Russian President Dimitri Medvedev. In fact you might say that Zapatera was out and out orgasmic. Said Zaps on the whole Russian deal - "There is a big increase in the number of Spanish tourists heading to Russia, the number is at 500,000, we have therefore decided to sign an agreement to stimulate, to favour, to fuck," he said, pausing briefly before ending the sentence with "to support this tourism". In Spanish the expression for to support, para apoyar; is similar to the expression for to fuck, para follar. So what can we say about Zapatero's fuck up?? It's not so much a case of to Russia with love, as a failure to conjugate!

Verbs with verve!

Speaking of Mind Your Language these comedic communications breakdowns bring to mind the old LWT TV series that was moderately popular, and moderately racist, for a year or two back in the 70's. The show featured the misadventures of a mild mannered English teacher, teaching English to a group of foreigners in a night class. Naturally the foreigners are all stereotypical. The teacher is pretty stereo typical too, shy, nervous, and bumbling. Despite raising some ire over it's depictions of foreigners, the show has managed to gain a continued existence - becoming popular in DVD format. This is largely because of the inclusion of Mauritanian/French actress Francoise Pascal in the cast as luscious French student Danielle Farve.

Ms Pascal was born in the Republic of Mauritius on Oct 14 1949. By the time she was 20 she had been featured in There's a Girl in My Soup with Peter Sellars. She went on to do spots in Upstairs Downstairs,  was a Penthouse Pet for 1970, was featured in French Resistance cult film Iron Rose - La Rose de Fer  - but is best remembered for Mind Your Language, where she delivered lines like "But Monsieur Brown (teacher), all French girls run around naked" & "Am I making you nervous? How sweet".

In addition to making Mr Brown nervous in each and every episode, she also made a ton of fans who've been following her career. After her brief Mind Your Language stint, she set off for the USA. She had spilt up with her long time love Richard Johnson (by whom she had a son Nicholas), and was now seeing Tim Hauser of the Manhattan Transfer. She did a role on The Young and the Restless, but her career really didn't take off. So it was back to Britain.

It seems that Mme Pascal's Hollywood experiences soured her on acting (good for her - Hollywood usually winds up eating people's souls). Once back in England, in 1987, she abandoned the profession, switching to computers and working for various charities. For those interested, here is a recent pic of Mme Pascal.

She looks much more content for having left show biz behind. Salvation is possible, even in Hollywood (Where sin abounds, Grace more so). As for Mind Your Language, I hear that Aishwarya Rai is considering a part in the movie version ;)

As for America's favourite celebrity power couple, the Star is reporting that Chris and Rihanna have secretly married!
