With the rumours of Rande Gerber getting sued for sex assualt making the rounds that leaves people asking "Why would he do it?? Why would he cheat on Cindy?" She was the hottest woman alive in 1992 through 1994. Naturally that brings up a discussion on the whole subject of cheating. Now you can't tyalk about cheating without bringing evolution into it - since sex is a big part of cheating!
Cheating is a crime of opportunity. It's also the evolutionary imperative: women are wired to create a stable home, while men are wired to spread their seed far and wide. Each is the optimum strategy for passing on DNA for it's respective gender.
Unfortunately some women get attracted to cheaters because it's a chance to prove they'll 'be different'. "He won't try that with me because I'm something special; and an exception to the rule". Hence some beautiful women have esteem issues. Many of these women need to be attractive in order to feel valued, and the same insecurity can lead them to 'test' themselves.
Well cheating does increase options. However males are much less invested in the creation of a stable home. This is simply because of the number of offspring males can potentially produce compared to females. Committing to a single family would drastically limit a male's 'pro creative potential'.
Women, on the other hand can produce an offspring at the rate of one every 2 years (unless she's constantly pregnant - imagine how many offspring a wayward male might father during that time). So in order to pass her DNA along she become much more invested in nurturing children, and raising them to healthy maturity. She may 'optimize' her chances by taking on lovers on the side, but this necessitates the selection of a 'sap' or 'dupe' as a mate: some one who will ask no questions, be grateful for what he gets, and accept any offspring produced as his own. He plays the provider role, and that allows the woman to then select the best potential breeding partners available. Hence when a woman cheats it requires more careful arrangement - while the males tend to be more impulsive (note for instance the rumours about Angelina Jolie wanting an open relationship - but doesn't want Brad Pitt to see anyone else).
Now males will have 'second families', but these arrangements come often after the fact; ie mistress gets pregnant and man then makes financial arrangements.
Incidentally this also explains the phenomenon of mothers tending to have a slight preference for their sons over their daughters. The sons will pass her DNA along much more efficiently. Hence you have those cases of women actually discouraging their sons from committing while encouraging them to play the field (not to mention the antagonism mothers feel toward their sons wives). Jackie Onassis and John Kennedy Jr being perhaps one of the most famous examples of this.
It's interesting how this creates a kind of dialect - or battle of the sexes. Women, who's chances are increased by having a male help with the parenting, is constantly trying to keep the male grounded, focused, and committed to their family situation; though she might take promising lovers on the side. She may even leave the male if a much better prospect comes up. meanwhile the male is constantly trying to escape domestic restraints and have the type of fun which threatens domestic stability. Each approaches the relationship from a point of view of 'genetic selfishness'. yet this genetic selfishness seems to inevitably undermine personal happiness and personal interest. We`re just doin' what comes naturally and with out a second thought.
